I use herbs to help improve my health and well-being. Do you?
Probably so. Then, doesn’t it makes sense to do the same for your cat?
Herbs are an amazing solution for chronic health problems.
Today, we are going to talk about cat renal disease and cat kidney failure herbal remedies.
There are two types of kidney failure in cats: acute and chronic.
First, let’s talk about cat renal failure in general.
Cat Kidney Failure
Acute renal failure happens suddenly and to cats of all ages.
If diagnosed and treated in time, your cat might fully recover from acute renal failure.
Chronic renal failure occurs gradually over time, usually in older cats.
Common causes are:
- Kidney infections and blockages
- Advanced dental disease
- High blood pressure
- Old age.
As they age, almost all cats are likely to suffer kidney disease.
Treatments For Cats With Kidney Disease
Western veterinary medicine doesn’t have a cure or feline renal failure.
Depending on severity, treatment may include:
- IV Fluids
- Special diet
- Pharmaceuticals
- Surgery.
Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine (TCVM) looks at disease differently than Western veterinary medicine.
According to TCVM, renal failure is caused by an energetic imbalance in the body.
TCVM uses several treatment methods, like herbs, acupuncture, food therapy, Tui-na, and moxibustion.
The following are my favorite cat kidney failure herbal remedies.
Cat Kidney Failure Herbal Remedies
Epakitin (Psyllium)
Epakitin is a chitosan-based supplement that helps filter your cat’s kidneys.
Jing Tang Herbs: Rehmannia 6
Rehmannia 6 helps kidney-diseased cats displaying:
- Cool seeking behavior
- Dry, flaky skin
- Excessive thirst
- Excessive panting
- Red and dry tongue
- Thready, fast pulse
- Yin deficiency.
It works to nourish Yin and tonify Kidney.
Rehmannia 6 is a blend of six TCVM herbs that work together to nourish Yin and tonify Kidney.
It contains:
- Fu Ling to drain Damp and strengthen Spleen
- Mu Dan Pi to cool Liver
- Shan Yao to tonify Qi and nourish Kidney Jing
- Shan Zhu Yu to nourish Yin
- Shu Di Huang to nourish Yin, Blood, and Jing
- Ze Xie to drain Damp and clear Kidney false Fire.
Typically, TCVM herbal blends take 6-8 weeks for maximum benefits.
Wei Qi Booster
Wei Qi Booster is a TCVM herbal immune booster for cats.
It rebuilds your cat’s general health and prevents upper respiratory infections.
Wei Qi Booster is a TCVM blend of eight different herbs.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the name for the “immune” or “host” defense system is “Defense Qi” or “Wei-Qi.”
In a healthy cat, the Wei-Qi (immune system) is strong enough to prevent invasion by pathogens (like viruses and bacteria).
Eastern medicine places more emphasis on the immune system than bacteria and viruses.
Pathogens are always present in the environment, and cannot harm the animal if the Wei-Qi (immune system) is strong enough to defeat them.
As soon as the Wei Qi weakens, pathogens can enter the body and cause disease and illness.
In TCVM, “Wei Qi Deficiency” is the name for the failure of the immune system to do its job.
Other Supplements for Cats with Kidney Disease
PET | TAO Freeze Dried Beef Kidney Cat Treats
In TCVM, the Five-Element Theory explains the relationship between the five naturally occurring elements in the environment.
In Eastern veterinary medicine, the kidney energy governs bone, opens up the ears, and regulates water flow. As pets age, just like humans, kidney energy progressively declines.
Kidney treats tonify your pet’s kidney, balancing the entire kidney meridian.
PET | TAO Soothe Bladder Supplement
Soothe Bladder supplements can support the entire urinary system and are a good preventative because cats prone to UTIs and stones are often more likely to suffer renal disease.
PET | TAO Soothe Bladder Supplement is formulated with an optimal blend of natural botanicals and mushrooms to support overall urinary tract health and to help maintain normal urine pH.
These include:
- Uva ursi
- Juniper Berry
- Cranberry
- Marshmallow Root.
Uva ursi is known for its uses with urinary tract disorders such as kidney and bladder infections because it is antilithic.
Antilithic plants help prevent the formation of stones in the urinary tract and remove those already formed.
Researchers differ opinions on whether antilithic herbs dissolve stones or aid the body in passing them by promoting urine flow to flush kidneys.
Juniper berries’ antibacterial and antifungal properties fight infection, while a volatile oil component of the berry called terpinen-4-ol helps filter the kidneys.
Marshmallow root also acts as a diuretic, increasing the flow of urine.
The plant helps minimize discomfort associated with kidney stones.
Marshmallow root is beneficial when combined with other diuretic herbs for kidney treatments or urinary problems.
