What are the different ziziphus jujuba medicinal uses?

This plant is commonly used in Eastern medicine.

However, Western practitioners are increasingly turning to this fascinating plant.

Chinese people have cultivated ziziphus jujuba for more than 4,000 years.

Science links ziziphus jujuba to supporting liver, digestive, immune and cardiovascular systems.

Ziziphus jujuba contains a wide array of different nutrients.

These include calcium, iron, phosphorus, potassium and zinc.

Additionally, they contain 20 times more vitamin C than any citrus fruit.

What Is Ziziphus Jujuba?

Ziziphus jujuba is a shrub, commonly known as a Chinese or Korean date.

Practitioners use the bark, fruit and seeds as medicine.

The fruit’s flavor ranges from an apple before it ripens to that of a true date when ripe.

Ziziphus jujuba grows in Asia and southeastern Europe.

However, all over the world, people consume processed versions of the plant.

Ziziphus jujuba contains biologically active saponins known as jujubosides.

The biochemical effect of jujubosides inhibits signal paths in the hippocampus, providing a relaxing effect.

What Are Ziziphus Jujuba Medicinal Uses And Health Benefits?

According to one study on hypertensive rats published in Avicenna J Phytomed, Ziziphus jujuba fruit extract provides protective cardiovascular effects.

The study authors noted that a low dose given over a long term provided the best effects.

Other ziziphus jujuba medicinal uses and benefits include neurobeneficial effects, such as relaxation.

A review of dietary ziziphus jujuba Fruit published in Evid Based Complement Alternat Med describes the benefits to the nervous system.

These benefits include calming down the mind and improving quality of sleep.

In fact, rats given high doses of ziziphus exhibited anxiety-reducing effects, appearing similar to that of Diazepam or 5-HTP.

Another study reveals the plant’s anti-tumor effects.

Researchers believe the triterpenoids of ziziphus jujuba show an inhibitory effect on human tumor cells and antioxidant activity.

These anti-tumor properties proved particularly effective in treatment of skin cancer.

During the study, ziziphus jujuba extract helped prevent the spread of melanoma cells.

Additionally, ziziphus contains properties of antioxidants and may reduce swelling and inflammation.

Reduction in inflammation can help protect the body against certain types of damage to the liver and other organs such as the heart.

How to Administer Ziziphus Jujuba to Your Pet

Before giving your pet any new supplement, consult your veterinarian.

Scientists have not proven safe use of ziziphus jujuba in pregnant animals or animals intended for breeding.

In fact, a single rat study showed ziziphus jujuba effected uterus size and estrus, suggesting animals used for breeding should avoid this plant.

Ziziphus jujuba is not intended for use with anticoagulants.

Use ziziphus jujuba with caution with ACE inhibitors, NSAID’s, and aspirin.

Ziziphus jujuba may be contraindicated in pets with hypertension and anxiety.

Ziziphus jujuba may be hypoglycemic.
