Herbal Supplements For An Aging Dog Losing Balance

image for: Herbal Supplements For An Aging Dog Losing Balance

It’s hard to watch an aging dog losing balance.

They may also experience weakness, shortness of breath, restlessness, and occasional nausea or vomiting.

Vertigo, sometimes called “old dog disease” or vestibular disease, is a temporary but common ailment in older dogs.

If you notice your pup is losing their balance, consult your veterinarian. Loss of balance can be a sign of an ear infection, which is easily treatable.

Does your dog experience occasional:

  • weakness, loss of balance?
  • nausea and possible vomiting?
  • shortness of breath?
  • Restlessness?

If so, your pup may be experiencing symptoms associated with normal aging.

Causes of An Aging Dog Losing Balance

Vestibular Disease

Firstly, middle or inner ear infections cause vestibular disease.

Secondly, trauma or injury, or tumors may cause vestibular disease.

Furthermore, the condition is typically diagnosed using medical history, clinical signs, and the results of blood and urine tests. A blood pressure measurement or X-ray may also be used.

Symptoms include:

  • Old age
  • Sudden onset of signs
  • No detectable cause
  • Quick resolution

Cerebellar Ataxia

Firstly, damage to the cerebellum, the part of the brain responsible for balance, posture, and coordination, impairs these functions.

Secondly, ataxia refers to uncoordinated gait.

Thirdly, symptoms of cerebral ataxia include:

  • High stepping gait
  • Tremors
  • Wide stance in rear legs
  • Head and body tremors
