Cat cancer is an unfortunately common pet malady.

Pets develop cancer for a variety of reasons.

Cat tumors, also called neoplasia, include various types of abnormal growths caused by uncontrolled cell division.

The neoplastic (tumor) cells are not self-regulated like normal cells.

Benign cat tumors are noncancerous. They do not spread to other body parts and rarely fatal.

Malignant cat tumors are cancerous. They destroy surrounding tissue, spreading to other parts of the body.

Luckily, treatment options are plentiful.

If you think your pet may have cat cancer, consult your veterinarian immediately for a proper diagnosis.

Cat Cancer Symptoms

Cat cancer typically manifests as unusual lumps or tumors.

Some cancers appear as foul body odor, persistent skin sores, litter box issues, loss of appetite, unexplained bleeding or lethargy.

Cat Cancer Causes

Most Common Types of Cat Cancer

Cat cancer is treatable if addressed quickly. Bring your cat in for regular check-ups annually.

If you think your cat suffers from any of the types of cancer listed below, consult your veterinarian immediately.

Lymphoma

Blood cancer is also known as lymphoma.

A cat’s lymphatic system regulates and maintains the flow of fluids throughout the body.

If cancerous cells are circulating throughout the body, they can collect in the lymph nodes, where lymphoma develops.

As such, symptoms include swollen lymph nodes.

It is believed cats contract lymphoma through exposure to Feline Leukemia Virus.

Many veterinarians offer an effective vaccination for Feline Leukemia Virus.

Squamous Cell Carcinoma

The types of cells that form on a cat’s skin are called squamous cells.

They also line passages of the respiratory and digestive tracts.

Squamous cells typically develop cancer in a cat’s mouth or in the body.

Mouth cancer can present as bad breath or mouth sores.

It may be caused by exposure to secondhand smoke.

Skin lesions that won’t heal may be a sign of skin cancer.

Mast Cell Tumors

White blood cells are also known as mast cells. These cells can become tumors, which appear as abnormal lumps.

Sometimes lumps and benign and sometimes they are malignant. Your veterinarian will have to biopsy the tumor to confirm a diagnosis.

There are no known causes for mast cell tumors.

This type of cancer is more common in Siamese cats.

Bone Cancer

Symptoms of bone cancer include lameness, swelling, and lethargy.

Bone cancer in cats is rare, but aggressive.

It is more common in large breed cats.
