img_RCS_stemcellStem cells are very important cells of the body which can help repair damaged tissue. They have the ability to divide and turn into many types of tissues or organs in the body including skin, fat, muscle, and bone. Some even have the ability to replicate into organs such as the heart, liver, or pancreas.

There are two types of stem cells: embryonic and somatic (adult).

  • Embryonic cells are found in the embryo and the placenta. The advantage of this type of stem cell is that they have the ability to turn into any kind of cell in the body and even generate new complete organs like the heart. These cells are rarely harvested and used due to ethical concerns.
  • Somatic stem cells, or adult stem cells, are found in the bone marrow, fat, skin, liver, blood vessel, and neurons. These cells can replicate and form closely related cell lines, but cannot replicate and form new new organs. Their use is much more limited as a form of treatment but the ethical concerns of harvesting are not present.

RC_SyringeSince the adult stem cells are concentrated in adipose tissue (fat), we can surgically collect collect these cells. After processing, the concentrated stem cell can be injected back into the animal in the affected joints or damaged areas of the body.

Results have been seen in as little as a week, however the expected course of repair will take weeks if not months. Multiple injections of the stem cells may be needed. There are no guarantees with this therapy, for chronic debilitating diseases such as arthritis, there is much promise associated with this and other complimentary treatments.
